Perry Township Madness – First Major Win

As I reported earlier, Perry’s highly regarded superintendent was bought out. This put the township into interim superintendent mode. I have to say that this duck (interim guy) could not have been any lamer, which was good in terms of damage control, but bad for the kids. After spending a year watching him in meetings, I had to wonder why he had a job in the district at all. Apparently his former position was useless and was, for all intents and purposes, eliminated, and here he was the superintendent.

LifeScan OneTouch Ultra and Software He!!

I consider myself a pretty smart computer person, so imagine my frustration when I tried to load LifeScan’s OneTouch Diabetes monitoring software on my laptop and it could not “find” my meter. I have to say that LifeScan does not recommend putting the software on a laptop because of all the ports. I’m not sure what the difference is between a laptop and a desktop (from a port standpoint), as my desktop has more USB ports than my laptop, but apparently there is an issue.

I don’t give up easily. I installed the software on my laptop a month ago and never could get it to find the meter – other software packages had no trouble – but this one was not going to make it easy. Actually it is easy, if you know where to look, which was a problem as the documentation doesn’t give you a hint as to where to look.

Township Craziness – cont.

It’s been a number of months since I’ve written on this topic. I’d like to be able to say that it all turned out well, but it didn’t. The township ended up paying a $470,000 settlement to Doug Williams, since there were never any lawful reasons he could be fired, and he moved on to another job. The township remains deeply divided by this issue. Some people are angry he ended up leaving, some are angry over the payoff, others are angry at the board, while others are angry that anyone is angry at the board.

Now people are looking forward to the next elections where at least 2 board members who caused this chaos can be voted out.

There’s More than 1 Way

Yesterday I was working on my zd8000 laptop, which is essentially a desktop replacement. It’s been getting too warm lately, even with the addition of a laptop desk, a chiller pad, and removing the battery. Yesterday was a bummer day when the machine started shutting down and wouldn’t boot up without shutting down. I figured it was a heat problem, so I got out my can of air and proceeded to gag myself with blowing the laptop out through the vents and fans.

Back in the Saddle Again…

After a year-long hiatus from dieting I am back in the saddle again. I really despise dieting almost as much as exercising, but I haven’t found any other way to control my weight.

Without getting into specific numbers, I’ve regained everything I lost between 2002 and 2004 and added 10 more pounds. Not liking the result at all because I was definitely making headway. So I reactivated my Calorie King membership and started journaling faithfully starting April 24. I haven’t been able to bring myself to start working out yet, but I managed to stay within my calories for the entire week and lost 4 lbs. OK, I know it’s mostly water, but 4 pounds is 4 pounds. My next goal is to add 3 15 minute exercise times per day for the entire week. No, it didn’t happen today, but I was out and about walking all day, so I don’t feel too bad about not doing formal exercise.

RAM Debacle Concluded

I know I am not the only person who worries about whether something they have ordered will ever arrive. I am no exception.

In my last post I said the guy had stated he had mailed the RAM the week before. Not true. He had mailed the RAM on April 6. Apparently he waits a week and mails out all the RMA replacements on the Friday a week after he receives the returned merchandise. It also takes 7 whole days to get a first class mailing from Georgia, which is weird because I can get a first class mailing from Texas in 3 days.

The RAM arrived on April 14. I opened the package and found 2 new RAM chips in actual RAM chip plastic containers (something I had not gotten in the last 2 shipments and the RAM was name brand. The RAM was also the type that I knew would work in my machine. I shut down my machine, unplugged it, removed the battery and replaced my old RAM with the new RAM. The machine fired up like a champ and has been working flawlessly since.

March 1 – April 14 to get the RAM. I felt I was back in the ’80’s before FedEx changed the way we expect to receive mail and packages, but I am finally a satisfied customer with 2 gigs of RAM in my laptop!

Washing Machine Woes – continued

Well, the great people at Norm Vogel and Sons came out and pronounced the dreaded news – the washer needed a new transmission at the bargain price of $379. I don’t think so. I paid the $65 trip fee and broke the news to my husband and then signed up for Consumer Reports online. Washing machines have changed so much in the past 10 years that I didn’t know which way to go.

RAM Debacle Continued…

Well, getting new RAM for my laptop has gotten more interesting. The new RAM supposedly mailed on March 16th arrived on March 23rd. So I eagerly opened the package only to see that the RAM sent was not one, but two identical RAM pieces just like the one that caused my machine to cycle and hang on the POST. Wow, it’s not like I didn’t tell the company that. OK, the bad RAM in the first package might have actually been bad, but I did tell the guy the other RAM worked just fine.

Washing Machine Woes

I started doing some laundry today and my 10 year old washing machine started making a bunch of noise every time it tried to spin out. While I was hoping for a quick fix, I knew in my heart that my Kenmore/Whirlpool washing machine was on life support – with a full load of every pair of underwear I own.

Ebay Experience

I am sitting here typing on my laptop that sits on a chiller purchased on Ebay, an AC adapter and battery purchased on Ebay, wearing my headset purchased on Ebay. Occasionally I wear the headphones I purchased on Ebay and sync my PDA with a cable purchased on Ebay. I really like Ebay for buying electronic gadgets. So I wasn’t concerned about buying memory for my laptop. I knew what I needed and did a buy now on Ebay with confidence on RAM that I knew would work in my laptop. That was March 1.
