Well, the great people at Norm Vogel and Sons came out and pronounced the dreaded news – the washer needed a new transmission at the bargain price of $379. I don’t think so. I paid the $65 trip fee and broke the news to my husband and then signed up for Consumer Reports online. Washing machines have changed so much in the past 10 years that I didn’t know which way to go.

So I piled my 80 year old mom who was living with us at the time into the car and headed off to Lowes to see what they had. I was leaning towards a front-loader, but as we all know, they don’t come cheap. It’s kind of hard when you don’t see them in action and the last time I got up close and personal with a front-loader it was 1964.

The LG with the steam cyle caught my eye. I am all about steam. Oh, I know that sounds crazy, but I have one of those Singer Magic Steam presses, a Rowenta iron that has a separate water reservoir, and a Jiffy upright steamer with a metal head. I take steam very seriously. The only problem with the LG is price and the fact that LG cautions against installing the machine on anything but a concrete slab. My laundry room is over the basement. There didn’t seem to be the same issue with the Maytag Epic, and we were able to buy the washer/dryer pair for the same amount of money.

I’ll let you know how’s the decision has worked out.
